Eveleth-Gilbert Board of Education Committee Meetings

An Educational Academies Task Force Committee created by the Eveleth-Gilbert and Virginia School Boards will meet on Wednesday, August 8, at 5:00 p.m. at Parkview Elementary School, 506 North Avenue West, Virginia, MN. The purpose of this committee will be to answer the questions of, “What does the final Academies structure look like on the East end of the Range? What Academies/Pathways make sense for the East end of the Range? What major career clusters belong in each Academy/Pathway?”  The committee will also start the process of looking at the learning spaces that are needed to accommodate the Academies/Pathways model. [Note: This final product will be modeled after the Academies found at Alexandria High School, Alexandria, MN.]

Even though this is a committee meeting, made up of parents, teachers, and business people from the area, this is a public meeting. All members of the public are welcome to attend and observe the committee discussion.

This is a continuation of discussions in determining the feasibility of Eveleth-Gilbert and Virginia working together in transforming how high school education is delivered to their students.  These discussions only involve high school education. The intent is to investigate if we can improve the quality and range of educational opportunities our high school students are receiving and to determine if there are any supporting services that can be combined to benefit our taxpayers.

Note: Currently, students in both school districts already take some classes together, such as welding and orchestra, and participate together on some athletic teams, such as girls’ hockey and boys’ and girls’ soccer, Nordic, and Alpine skiing. These shared programs have worked well and have enabled students to have more educational and athletic options.

This is the continuation of an open conversation between the two school districts. The school boards have met, collectively, nine times, and independently, after much public input, voted to continue moving forward. This will be the first committee meeting, in a series of committee meetings, to investigate how a high school Academy/Pathway concept would work on the East end of the Range. All committee meetings will be completely open to the public.

Future meetings of this committee are currently scheduled for Wednesday, August 15 at 5:00 p.m. and Wednesday, August 22 at 5:00 p.m. at Parkview Elementary School.
