Minnesota State High School League’s competitive speech program is open to eligible students in grades 7-12. Grade 6 students may join the speech team and compete in any JV invitational, as well as several varsity invitationals but will not be eligible for post-season contests.

Length of Season

Invitational speech meets for both varsity and junior varsity begin the middle of January and continue throughout the post-season elimination tournaments, ending in mid-April.

Saturday, April 14, 2018 – MSHSL Section 7A tournament at Marshall School in Duluth

April 21 & 22, 2018 – MSHSL State tournament at Apple Valley HS

Sunday, April 29, 2018 – Speech/Drama Awards Party (Virginia Bowling Gardens)


Practice Sessions (see attached Lettering Criteria)

Every speech student is expected to meet with his/her coach ONCE per week.

>One team practice session per week: EGHS – Monday evening at 6:30 pm until 8:00 pm.

>Students must practice with a coach once per week, either at team practice or individually.

Fees: Grades 6-8…$35; Grades 9-12…$75 (Fees must be paid by December 8th, 2017)

What else should I know?

Did you know that Oprah was a shy freshman in high school when she joined speech? By the time she was a senior, she became a STATE CHAMPION! Now look at her. She credits her success in life to her high school speech experience.


Don’t worry about other conflicts, such as sports. Speech has a flexible schedule.
